Is it common for ETB packs to have the reverse holos replaced with commons? I bought a CP ETB from a trusted vendor and all of the reverses were commons. I know some sets like Vivid Voltage have bad quality control but I'm not sure if CP is also affected.

This card always reminds me of when I first learned about about Pokemon cards, I went to my comic shop with my allowance and bought a few booster packs to get my collecting started. What are you buying? I'm UK and I just finished a Generations fullset and got a lot of stuff from Europe that I either couldn't get locally or was way overpriced. Jokes aside the chances of another charizard being in this set is astoundingly low. For starters, that charmander is a reprint of the one in vivid voltage (besides the art). They’d put charizard everywhere they could if he was in the set and charizard is nowhere seen in the video or on products. It seems that battle styles is focusing on less popular pokemon like empoleon being on the pack art (despite not being in swsh) and mons like octillery, houndoom, mienshao, and emboar being featured pokemon for this new feature

Goofy shit tends to happen in the reverse holo slot when they aren't paying attention. I've probably told this story before but back in 2005 when EX Delta Species came out, one of the boxes for the prerelease (that thankfully was used as prize support and not for the actual sealed packs) had the wrong card in the reverse holo slot.

Every single one was either a Groudon *, Kyogre * or Metagross *.

You see, H25 is the highest holofoil version of the card (think of it like a rainbow Pikachu VMAX) but 37 is the regular VMAX version of the card

The 37 can be reverse holofoil like pic related but the H25 is a more rarer version of the card which is why it's more expensive

tl;dr H25 is the max rarity of the card in the set, 37 is not but it can be foil

If you're buying them to "invest" in while they're in standard, you're making a massive mistake. If you're playing with them or just collecting, then go ahead, but meta cards always drop off a cliff after rotation. It varies, and they do go up after time passes, but you'll probably be losing money in the short term after rotation. Similarly, after rotation is the best time to buy them.

AFAIK no one's saying it's coming "any day," but it's definitely coming sooner than later. I agree it's a racket, but I've started coming around to its uses. For one, it adds a lot of security for the seller with a few examples ITT. No one can say you hid damage and return their own garbage in its place, and no one can sperg out disagreeing over completely subjective at-home condition ratings.
If you're happy calling an 8 or 9 "mint" for your own collection, raw is definitely the way to go. But if you can't stomach cards that have been touched literally ever, or you're a seller with single items worth upwards of $100, it makes for nice insurance.

How many cards from those sets do you honestly think are still in good condition? Very few. It's the same problem early MtG has where the young playerbase didn't take care of their cards, but to an even GREATER extent, so the cards that were actually opened back then are typically in shit condition and aren't worth a damned thing anymore. I work at a decent sized card shop, and of all the people in the past few months that came in because they dug out all their cards from when they were a kid, less than 1/10 of them actually had cards that we bought and that were good enough that I'd add to them to my personal collection were I the one actually purchasing them and not the shop. Half of them were beat to shit and I wouldn't even take them, a bit less than that were in good enough condition that we took them, but too damaged for my tastes (light whitening around the edges but no creases or anything like that, bad enough that you could tell they were played unsleeved but probably only a few times), and the last 1/10th cursed me out and called me a con artist because I wouldn't give them $300 for their heavily played Base Set 2 Charizard with creases on it or other such stupid bullshit. and every third one of those we had to call the cops on because they wouldn't stop screaming at us from outside the store once we kicked them out.

The reason prices are going up is because of nostalgia. Some of the gold star cards (looking at you two Espeon and Umbreon) are objectively more rare than a lot of the more popular gen 1 cards, but because these returning bandwagoners never played past gen 2 sets, they aren't really getting attention.

What sets would you say the majority of these cards are from? For gen 3 and onward you kinda can’t go wrong with sorting out all the ex, gold star, level X, whatever and seeing what of them is valuable.
Gen 2 is a bit less obvious, crystal types are nice in the last expansions, holos are nice too. They’re not as big a deal in gen 3, reverse holos are much less valuable than they appear but you might get lucky.

Some Gen III reverse holo cards are fucking retarded, because they don't look like dogshit. Playable cards like Rocket's Admin are already kind of expensive, but good condition reverse holos go for +$80. Hell, before the gold versions of Rare Candy got printed, the Holon Phantoms and Emerald reverse holo versions were +$100, thankfully they're down to more reasonably prices now. Which is reminding me that the last reverse holos I need for my Reverse Holo Queendom deck are Rare Candies and a Mr Briney's Compassion, I should probably get on that and finish foiling it out.

Has anybody ever found really old packs for sale in non-collector stores?
I remember, this has to be a while ago, I happened to find an aquapolis pack just lying around in Target. This had to be like 5-10 years after it released.
I opened it and got nothing meanwhile now they're selling for like $300-400 on eBay. I wonder how you even lose track of merchandise for that long.

idk if target still gets them, but they used to have third-party blisters with sets that were like, 4 or 5 sets behind whatever the current one was, and sometimes they'd have a much older pack with them (think original ex sets, and early e reader sets) I actually managed to get some good shit from them, so they weren't weighed packs.

There was also a time where target randomly had jungle theme decks in like, 2009, that was pretty nuts.

Keep in mind PSA can increase the value a lot if the card is good enough to get a high score but then you need to pay money and send it out and prices might go down.

Don't buy individual packs is what I mean. Always buy a complete product. Blisters, booster boxes, collection boxes, tins, etc. A common tactic with boxes from some scummy sellers online who do mass box openings is to open packs out of a box until they get one of the "one every (other) box" cards and then just sell the rest of the packs from the box, since they know none of those packs will have the "money" cards.

I bought up some newer stuff, a handful of VMAX/Tag Team cards. Sometimes I grab Neo Destiny/Aquapolis etc cards but I don't go after the WOTC stuff necessarily. I think per set is the way to go, though if I map the cards I sometimes fill a page with the same mon 'cause it looks nice.
I usually leave the commons out and put them in a deckbox sorted by number/set or I map cards by artist

You can find existing images, split them into an opaque layer, cmyk and yellow border/black finish. Cmyk print it on an industrial printer using aceton scrubbed cheap (holo) cards as your stock for high quality fakes. You just need to invest a few thousand dollars and hundreds of hours to perfect the color offsets

Basically you make a wants list and you can choose to minimise price or minimise the number of shipments to get them all. The problem with cardmarket is it doesn't have seperate entries for certain card variants (like reverse holos) so it's bad for that type of thing.

Do you consider the birthday pikachu from the world collection as a legitimate copy for your collection? I was surprised to see that even that version goes for a lot.

I'm missing 15 cards from my WBSP set, but I have the most expensive ones. I think mewtwo (12) and venusaur (13) are the two most expensive i'm missing.
If there was a trading scene I could easily fill in the blanks. I have 10+ of some of the later promos because they would just hand me a stack of them back in the day because nobody wanted them.
