Shouldn't you always put at least a single EV into Speed so you can outspeed your tier at very little cost?

i always put 8 speed evs, just to outspeed the 4speed ev people. if someone commits to putting 12+speed evs then they deserve to outspeed me, unlike 4ev people who are pussies and dont deserve anything

Depending on the mon, I always take a peek at the speed tiers to see if there's a certain benchmark I can reach with minimal investment that's worth investing to beat.

Most Pokemon run 252/252/4 spreads, with the extra 4 going into speed since it's the only stat where 1 extra point makes a difference. So you'd theoretically need 8 EVs to outspeed them. Unless you get caught in the traveler's dilemma where both players are trying to pick the optimal speed to outspeed each other without taking more EVs out of their main stats than needed.

I give them 252 EV's, a speed-positive nature, and a choice scarf.
The only possible way enemies of the same species can outspeed me on turn 1 is by doing the same thing and winning the coin flip.
