"Dark" type in Japanese is called "aku", meaning "evil" type. OP is wondering what would happen with the English translation if they made a literal "dark" type (called "yami" or whatever).

The "Dark" Type is actually the "Evil" type in japan to go opposite of the "Hero" type (Fighting types)

A Dark and Light type hasn't been done though I'd imagine a Dark type would be immune to Fighting and Light would be immune to Dark.

they could reimplement the shadow type and give it an appropriate set of strengths and weaknesses and I can see light and shadow being super effective against each other. as for pokemon being retyped I can't see too many dark types fitting the criteria save for maybe darkrai.
