The other starters were transferable though, as were the Alola starters. They were just too unpopular to get in to the actual dex.

Within the Pokémon fanbase, yes. Outside of it, no. Charizard will sell more to normies as we can observe with new games Charizard in the Pokédex outselling games without Charizard in the Pokédex.

1st) RGB (Has Charizard)
2nd) GS (Has Charizard but it is not catchable)
3rd) SS (CHAAAAAARIZARD FROM KANTOOOOOOOO)
4th) DP (Does not have Charizard, killed it with Sneaky Plebbles, is just that based)
5th) XY (Has two new Charizards, and you get it early)
6th) RS (Can’t even transfer your Charizard, but Charizard was OU this Gen)
7th) SM (Cocktease you with Zard Glide but doesn’t even let you catch one. Poor show.
8th) BW (Soft reboot, no way to get Zard the whole Gen. Only reference is a fucking bridge)

GO hasn't added anything new to the series canon, even their introduction to GO came LONG after Game Freak started work on Gen VIII. Even Meltan was created by some nip zoomie at Game Freak and not in Hanke's basement. They add to their game, what Game Freak/TPC want them to add and nothing more. They're VERY much the bitch in this dynamic.
