That may be the only way to determine if megas are a gimmick or not.It's something new used as a selling point of the game, Megas, Z Moves, Dynamax, even Fairy Type, Customization, Regional Forms etc. It's not inherently a bad thing at all, just a classification of things that were used to attract people to a game.
>What's wrong with the 4th stage of Pokemon evolution just being temporary rather than permanent?Well this is subjective, but I think it is very pointless to give a pokemon a pseudo fourth stage (especially ones who don't need it like Mewtwo and Charizards two forms) instead of just bringing back cross gen evolutions. Not only would it make the pokemon more relevant and stronger without being a temporary fad, it is would also be more creative.
