The problem here is that what she's saying is perfectly reasonable in-universe where a sufficiently skilled trainer can push his pokemon to arbitrary heights of performance if he has a strong enough bond with them, but in-game some pokemon are strictly better than others and you are handicapping yourself if you try to, say, beat Red/Blue with just a Pidgey.

Unless you're looking to run metapod or something, you CAN make non-meta pokemon work as long as you actually try to find a niche for them and understand the game fairly well. I would argue having a few oddball pokemon is even optimal, since most teams are built with the top pokemon in mind and might have a hole a weirder pick can exploit.
