2019
>Pokémon Sword and Shield released.
>First main series Pokémon games to be released on a home console so everyone is hyped as fuck.
>Best selling Pokemon games since Gold & Silver.
>Easy, linear, uninteresting gameplay
>Goes down as some of the worst Nintendo games released for the switch.

2022
>Gen 9 games released on Switch
>Game engine is an improved version of the gen 8 wild area
>First Pokémon games with a fully controllable camera throughout the entire game
>Actually switches up the formula quite a bit, less linear than previous games and focuses on exploration. Genuinely fun Pokémon games.

Yep. A lot of companies make this mistake. You don't see the results of your actions on the very following iteration, you often need to wait two or three for your fame to catch up to your product sales.
You'd expect big companies, with economists and finacial experts and managers and such, would know this, but they most often don't.

I could see them being desperate enough to do it if the previous game flopped really bad. Gotta appease the investors.
Combine that with pressure from Nintendo because of a new console launch and I'd say it's pretty realistic.

Not to downplay how shit Sword and Shield is, but the Switch is not a home console. It is a handheld that can connect to TV screens. Of course, the Switch is capable of much more than what Game Freak did. Same goes for the 3DS, it can do much more than UltraSun and UltraMoon.

Emerald speedrun is longer than the combined speedrun of those 3 games. That's how much content Pokemon used to have.

The Emerald map is also bigger than any 2 of those 3 combined.

The battle system is long overdue for a complete overhaul.
Also add an in-game TCG game (like gwent in witcher 3) that uses the turn-based battle system to appease the nostalgiafags

FF7R is one of the worst examples you could have chosen, as the combat gameplay is the one of the few parts of the game some people like. Even Dragon Quest 11 would have been a better example. Or, going back to the 3DS, the Bravely Default games smooth out the classic JPRG experience a lot with features that should be standard (encounter modulation, EXP modulation, speeding up animations, and a robust autobattle system).

The battle system is not going to change, retards. Pokemon battling is one of the most popular competitive's in the world.

Final Fantasy had nothing to lose from changing their battle system because nobody cares.

The second iteration you’re cobbling together ain’t gonna happen, anon. Gamefreak’s been struggling for three generations straight because they’re almost always playing catch-up with the rest of the industry. They’re hopelessly incompetent and can only pump out something decent when they aren’t focusing on chasing visuals which ironically blows up in their face most of the time anyways since they clearly can’t do 3D.

It doesn't help that they have no time to do anything well either. Compare that to other Nintendo titles, which usually release once a console generation (unless they heavily re-use an engine). That having been said, I assume OP was describing the second example at a GameFreak level, which is to say it's still incompetent but you can see there was an attempt like in SM. We won't be getting something super competent like BW for a long time, I think. Who knows though, I've been surprised before.

Another golden age is coming, we just need to see how low GameFreak will stoop with HOME. Cutting Pokemon can no longer be used as a scapegoat for why people hate the new games, all it takes is a couple more blunders for the rose tinted glasses to come off.
The sad part is that this won't happen because LGDP will be extremely high quality but normies will turn on it because it's Let's Go

Everytime gamefreak does one thing right, they also tend to piss off majority of the fanbase with a feature no one asked for
Gamefreak being their retarded selves interpret this as backlash due to the one thing they did right and take three steps back in their next installment

DQ11 is literally the worst example. The battle mechanics are stale and the graphics are last gen (albeit upscaled to colorful 4k). DQ11 is essentially a slightly better GameFreak. They're both stuck in a rut and afraid to challenge their current fanbase.

And then you have Bravely series which started out promising but got stale by the 2nd entry. I've never seen an upstart series collapse so quickly.

DQ is a completely different case, though.
It's the great great grandfather of JRPGs and no one's clamoring for it to change because of it, especially in an age of flashy Action RPGs and grandiose, subversive presentations that other franchises evolved into, a lot of Japan appreciates DQ for sticking to its simplistic, ever-faithful roots because it's a welcomed change of pace and invokes nostalgia, as well as the fact that subversion's become the new norm, so in a weird sense, doing it by the book in of itself is an enjoyable subversion.

Honestly DQ11 gets far too much of a pass. It has high resoluton textures, sure.
But the rigid and blocky animations (especially when traversing the world map) remind you of last gen games. It reminds me of the HIRE THIS MAN unreal engine games. Pretty but undeniably outdated.

Japanese love DQ as it's a generic JRPG with typical ancient evil awakens in medieval setting and hero must defeat it, etc.

It's the ancestor of all JRPGs and will remain simplistic for as long as SquareEnix exists. Pokemon has tried to reeinvent itself a few times now trying to copy mechanics of other popular games such as YW or new gimmicks.

It's nowhere near close G&S and that's with DLC propping it up (might as well add third versions to the other games)

Meanwhile Animal Crossing is on path to dethrone Pokemon Red and Blue. The Switch is a huge success and everyone is seeing huge numbers except Pokemon.

Your figures are outdated. Sword and Shield had sold 19.02 million copies in September 2020.
DLC aren't counted as separate purchases in these numbers either so you can't include the third versions in the count.

There's a huge difference. When ORAS was about to come out, there was no reason to expect it to be as bad as it is. X and Y was a disappointment, but so was Diamond and Pearl. Everyone expected X and Y to be followed by gen 6's Platinum and Heartgold and SoulSilver. Nowadays everyone knows Sword and Shield isn't getting a HeartGold and SoulSilver tier remake. But despite this there are a ton of Sinnohfags who are hyped for the Diamond and Pearl remake even though they know it's not going to be good. What's up with that?
