You got to be real for a second. We've been fighting legendaries as 10 year olds for decades. leaving them paralyzed at 1 hp for hours trying to catch them. A champion losing to one is bullshit and embarrassing. Alder never really felt like a champion to me.

He's still my favorite Champ though, mostly because of what he says at the Graveyard in the postgame.

I dunno, that just really resonated with me. Sure, it's great to strive for something, but once you reach that level, what's next?

It also makes more sense of his interactions with Cheren. Alder didn't realize how empty his goal was until after his partner died, meaning he'd lost his chance to reach a more meaningful goal with it. Alder is trying to save Cheren from making the same mistake he did.

Of course not. But he's suppose to be a strong trainer, and since you only battle him after rematches, he does not feel so strong.

Gameplay aside, the fact that he held his own against a powerful legendary long enough for you to show up makes him considerably strong. He's a strong guy himself, btw. In the anime, he can lift up Gigalith like it was nothing.

I see the entire point of the game went over your heads. Gen 5 was when Pokemon really started to hammer home the "Pokemon are partners" line and emphasize the bond between Pokemon and their trainers. It was the first game to "humanize" Pokemon training. Nintendo went out of their way to bend over backwards and show that humans and Pokemon love each other. I suspect they began to feel threatened by possible PETA-like bullshit as Gen 5 was around when the libs discovered the Internet and became butthurt about everything. In summary, Alder is meant to represent that one can be strong and respected, even in the Pokemon world, in ways outside of battling. The game was very on the nose about how pure physical strength and nothing else is meaningless. Also about how strength comes in many forms, from knowledge, to love, to friendships, to battling (look at Cheren's character arc/inability to appreciate Alder's unique brand of strength, which results in Cheren's failure to become Champion).

None of the Champs do much. Lance helps out in Mahogany, but doesn't do anything during the Radio Tower takeover, Steven helps you battle Team Magma in Emerald, but both him and Wallace don't do much when Kyogre/Ground are released, Cynthia does what you said,Iris and Diantha literally show up for 2 seconds in the story and have involvement with the villains, and Leon at least tries to catch the unleashed Legendary. Alder clearly does the most, despite jobbing because there'd be no story if he won.

If I recall correctly, Gen 5 was the first game translated in-house by TPC after Nintendo canned the old crew and it really shows. There's still the same plot holes and stupid concepts but BW's script feels a lot better to read in Japanese.
