I think canon is:

Red, obviously he and Blue make the most sense and Gen 1 only had him as a choice.

Ethan: First two games are only him and idk, I kind of see him picking Cynda and Silver makes more sense with Totodile.

Brendan or May can both fit imo. We see May with both Mudkip and Torchic in the animated trailer and Brendan with Treecko, but imo it makes more sense to have May be the rival as getting both starters left from your dad makes a lot of sense.

Gen 4 is a tough one. Dawn is miles ahead in design and infinitely more popular but I'm going to go with promo arts and Pkmn Masters here and say that Lucas is canon, but both are solid choices.

For Black and White to me it's both guys. It doesn't make much sense to have one guy and one girl in the canon, since the mom of the BW1 protag actually thinks for a sec you like like their son/daughter, so you have to go girl/girl or boy/boy and in that case, with the animated trailer showing Nate, I go with him.

XY is a tough one. I guess by popular vote it would be Serena and since Serena is always associated with Fennekin and Calem almost always with Froakie, it seems logical that he would be the rival. Also in Masters, he has Meowstic, which the rival has. They also describe him more as the rival with his personality.

USUM for me is 100% Elio. Promo art that shows his canon team as well.

For SWSH, I thought I would choose Victor, but with the recent addition of her in Masters implying she is the protag, I have half-changed my mind.

Gold/Ethan: Again, obviously.

Brendan: This was a bit more ambiguous, since the anime made May be Norman’s daughter, but in the ORAS trailer, it makes sense to have May with the leftover starters after Brendan picks Treecko.

Dawn: Seethe, incels. It’s a girl. Mom is a famous coordinator, matches anime canon (no, I don’t really treat anime canon as game canon, but this one coincidentally matches up).

Hilbert OR Hilda: Very ambiguous, Generations makes it Hilbert, but it can be either really.

Nate: Nate makes the most sense for the boyish rivalry with Hugh, animated B2W2 trailer features him the most.

Serena: Similar reasoning to Dawn. Mom connection, and it just fits better in style and story. The friendship with Shauna and rivalry with Calem just seems more natural.

Elio: Just fits better.

Victor: Victor would be my go-to canon just because of the natural feel of the relationship with Hop.

I'd also argue Gloria. As it mirrors the dynamic of Leon and Sonia perfectly. The whole game is basically history repeating itself. Plus Marnie's thirst for MC ironically, works better with her instead of that faggot Victor.

plus her mindscape is the map of Sinnoh, maps show up for protags IIRC
