I’m wanting to do a Rock/Fighting/Flying starter trio, but it’d just fuck with Normal-types being so abundant in the early game. Would the Rock starter having poor defense and the Fighting starter being special but not getting access to a special Fighting move until ~mid to late teens help this?

I was also thinking of just going GFW with those as the secondary types, and the mean rival has the weaker starter but also uses a signature Pokémon that’s a Dragon-type and you’re meant to job to her first battle.

I suppose, but desu GameFreak are usually spot on with front loading Normal/Flying/Bug because they’ve got logical weaknesses and resistances and are kinda just easy to design for earlier on.

The real issue is when some types are extremely back loaded

Ice usually is a late game type, but I wanted to have it early in my dex while staying more true to GF's structure - so I made it both my regional bird (>>45735890) and another early route Pokemon evolutions secondary type. Still not that early as say, Pokémon Sage, which had its early routes be snow-themed, so you'd start with Ice types.

That’s fair, I just feel like you can’t purge Normal-types from the start because of their core nature and that effects how a Rock or Fighting starter works.

It’s a Flying-type Colugo, a Rock-type sand lizard, and a Fighting-type climbing gourami. They’re all terrestrial, but as they evolve they become Flying/Grass, Rock/Fire, and Fighting/Water to also represent the air, underground, and sea. It’s a theme, but not jobmons.

They started off as GFW and I’m considering just starting them back there. They end up with the same final evo types tbf

I'm not a very good artist, just made the jump to digital a few months ago, but I'm working on a fakemon region project at the moment and I've been really happy with this one. It's a regional evolution to Fearow based on the Thunderbird! I got a lot more fakemon, if anybody is interested, though the quality of them varies pretty heavily.
I'm also taking ideas for regional forms, regional evos, and other fakemon concepts at the moment, so if you have a neat idea for a pokemon for a Mojave Desert/Mexico/Southern California region, feel free to toss it out there, I'll try to draw it later tonight!

I've been working on a California region and an idea that I've had for a while is a cactus-cat version of Skitty.

I've already seen the cactus Meowth variant, but I wanted to do something different. Meowth has been used too much already, and there are other cat pokemon. And I figure that Skitty's tail would work really well as a bear-paw cactus. It's practically the same shape.
I'm thinking Grass/Fairy type.

And heck yeah I'd like to see some more of your fakemon.
What do you have for starters?

Thank you! I like your idea for Skitty, it's a really clever idea! A bear paw cactus is a really neat direction for the line, and I look forward to what you create.
As for my starters, unfortunately I only have the fire line completed yet, though I'm working on the grass line currently (got one stage done though I unfortunately don't have the picture save), and I'm in need of some solid ideas for a water starter.
That all said, this is the Calferno line! It's based on longhorn cattle, cattle ranching, branding irons, and barbeque grills.
I also have my region's pseudolegends drawn, 3 of the 5 fossil pokemon I want to make (that's a lot I know, I just REALLY like fossilmons), a few regional forms, and some assorted random fakemon. If any of those interest any of you guys, feel free to ask and I'll show them off!
(Sorry for the long wait, wasn't able to respond for like 6 hours due to weird IP shenanigans)

Huh, neat we both have fire/steel type starters.
I went with a goat. I got the idea from people using goats for fire prevention by having them eat all the underbrush and whatnot. Damascus Steel is a thing, and so are Damascus goats.
Admittedly a weak connection.

The Bridge Troll is also a big source of inspiration.
The final evolution is essentially this spooky looking thing.
People of this region used the base form to fight fires and the evolved forms were important as they helped built the big bridges of the region.

Don't sell yourself short, the Damascus connection is a very pokemon idea, it fits really well! Also, bridge trolls and the "three billy goat's gruff" connection is also really neat. I like it!
Nice to see we also both agree that fire/steel is a sick typing (that shouldn't just belong to the Hell Frog)
Here's another regional form of mine, by the way. Because of the whole Mojave desert connection, I thought it would be cool to pay homage to the tons of alien sightings in the region by giving Elgyem a suitably pulpy and spooky 50's style alien invader regional form and evolution. Tourlieder is, of course, a corruption of the phrase "To Your Leader", like how Elgyem and Beheeyem are based on corruptions of the abbreviations LGM and BEM. In Tourlieder's case, I wanted to create the idea of an evil alien emperor, with a lot of inspiration being taken from various aliens and emperors in media. I think he came out pretty good (even if his design is a little cluttered)

Honestly the typings for the Picantian Elgyem line has always been something I've kind of wrestled with, I feel like bug/steel fits but it could easily be psychic/bug, psychic/steel, even bug/electric or psychic/electric, as you've said.
For another example of me having issues finding a proper type for a mon, I have these guys, who act as one of the pseudolegends for my region (yes, I'm pulling a Hoenn and having 2).
These guys are based on the Coconut Octopus, one of my favorite animals ever, and I can't for the life of me decide whether they should be water/steel, water/psychic, or steel/psychic. Hell, I could even see steel/dark or water/dark for them. I want to highlight how damn smart coconut octopi are, but at the same time I think everyone agrees shit like Grapploct not being water/fighting type is dumb, so who knows. I'm a lot more confident making the Cephalodged line water/steel than changing the type on Picantian Elgyem, though. Beheeyem is named after Bug Eyed Monsters, after all.

How are these guys? They are based on silk spiders, with Ariados taking elements from those big spider eggs you tend to see in RPG's near spider bosses (Caverns of Araneae in Diablo 3 for example). They're supposed to evolve even further, into some sort of spider queen (body type like Cydaea from D3).

Here's one of my weirder (and quite frankly reallg gimmicky pokemon), this is Jesturn! It's a little jester/clown dude who has its personality, type, and ability based on the music it hears. You wouldn't be able to flip it in battle more than likely, but there would be a section in the game where you could change its forms by interacting with a musical instrument and some sheet music, like how you could change Deoxys' and Rotom's forms in the past.

Personally I think the design looks a bit too 'real', if that makes any sense, although it could always be the artstyle. What the designers seem to do is make the earlier stages of evolution look somewhat like actual animals, and then accentuate certain features as the evolutions go on. Looking at other flying pokemon, the Lidove line is an excellent example of this, with the first stage looking kind of like a real animal, but by the end of the line, the bird wears a mask with what looks sort of like antennae and has gained a colored underbelly, along with a large flat tail. You can see this effect with Pidgey as well. A fairly 'realistic' base, but by the end, it's got a long, brightly colored crest that flows from it's head like a banner.

I honestly designed them to look somewhat realistic, as I feel most regional birds are fairly realistic. Toucannon is just a Toucan and follows a path where it’s base stage is an accentuated version of its real-life counterpart and gets more realistic as it evolves, Swellow is also really similar to the bird it’s based on. My evolution is based on a Great Auk, but one that freezes flippers around its feet for extra agility in the water and freezes its beak for aerodynamics (hydrodynamics?). It might not show in the design but I tried giving it some features that you’d never see in real life

Are work in progress fakemon okay?
I’m trying to design a bug dragon variant of slime barney. The idea is that it’s fused with the leucochloridium equivalent of the pokemon world. After evolving the two enters a symbiotic relationship where the parasite uses its hypnotic movements to charm the preys. I added the bodies in the stalks, the pattern to differentiate from the Kalos version and even little mouths on the hands.
I don’t know how to color it. Should I go full raimbow on the worms? I was thinking to give the main body a translucent yellowish green color.

Hey, thanks for the criticism! I honestly agree, I have always felt that I made the signature move a bit too strong, and I agree about the tail, I've been meaning to get around to shortening it.
As for the balanced SpA/Atk thing, I feel like that was more of a thing before the big physical/special split, if we look at more contemporary ones I feel like they lean one way or another a lot more, like look at the Alola and Galar starters. That said, I did want to make the early stages more balanced, so I made sure to give Calferno the more balanced SpA and Atk compared to its evolutions.
The extra-long dex entries are actually something I would want to do when I get around to making my fan region into a game, I would want to make a completely overhauled pokedex that gives a far more in-depth analysis of the pokemon, complete with a ton of flavor stuff like larger dex entries, habitat, diet, and more game-substantial stuff like a movelist, a more detailed map of places you can find the mon in-game, that kind of thing. So yeah, the dex entries are really long, but trust me, I'm gonna be putting them to good use!

As thanks, here's one of my region's fossilmon (I'm doing the really overdone fan region idea of the fossilmon being ice type instead of rock type because they're ice age creatures, but don't worry, I have more traditional rock type fakemon on the way as well)

I think Sentaikoon's HA is a bit too similar to Merciless, but then again I think Poison Touch - or an ability like it - fits Atomphibian more than Merciless, at least going off what is presented here. Maybe a re-named Serene Grace could work, as a reference to the many effects radiation can have on the victims, though now that I think about it, Merciless also works with that bit of lore in mind.
Dazzling could work as Sentaikoon's ability, maybe. To show how a heroic character like it can't be blindsided by cheap shots.
Overall though I wouldn't say there's "issues" with your decisions.

Maybe shift those around somewhere else, put them more to the sides of its head? I agree wholeheartedly with >>45763503, the moves are great but the abilities on Sentaikoon and Atomphibian are a little off. I agree that Dazzling works really well for Sentaikoon, but I also nominate something like Guts or even Galvanize (if the former I suggest making it so that Flame Orb can affect Fire Types, makes Guts activation easier). As for Atomphibian, Merciless is neat, but I feel like it requires a move that makes poisoning easily, otherwise it kind of becomes hard to utilize outside of the context of a team that revolves around poisoning the target. Considering its a special attacker, poison touch also might be hard to actually use as well, since it requires you to actually use a move that makes contact to poison the foe. Maybe instead, considering it seems bulky, you could go for Poison Point so that physical attackers have a harder time with it? Regenerator is also an option for HA since it seems like its based on salamanders, which are famous for having really good healing factors, though that might make it a bit too close to Toxapex. Maybe Corrosion would work best, since radiation warps metal really bad, and would give it some neat tech as a bulky toxic-spammer? Food for thought, to be sure. That all said, all of the mons are great and you're a great artist!

Change fire starter's first and second evo a bit, looks most unfinished out of the 3 and the electric typing is barely obvious.

I really like how despite the basic and weak typing, grass starter line seems to be best design overall and seems to have best signature move.

I don't know, to be honest. I'd recommend looking at the other snakemons we have, like Seviper, Arbok, and Serperior. If you compare this to them, there's a pretty clear difference in feel. It might just be a coloring and shading thing? Who the hell knows, I'm not a very good artist anyways
