More accurately, it's because of the controversy showing up everyone on the internet that caused people who normally wouldn't care to check out the game/buy it out of spite.

The vast majority of people didn’t even know about the “controversy”

Even if you say 500k people knew about it, and that’s stretching it, the game sold 20 million copies. Those 500k are irrelevant

It turns out the people theorizing Gamefreak was planning on ransoming the pokedex back were correct, they have been using them to sell shitty DLC packages.

Didn't flop, though, children bought it anyways.
In other news, though, Gamefreak is no longer a disgusting mole on Nintendo's perfect ass, Gamefreak fits right in.

You underestimate the power of the nintendo switch
LGPE already sold pretty well, but having a new main series switch game that wasn't made specifically for mobile gamers was going to sell well whether they fucked it up or not

Is SWSH more.. open world than the other pokemon games? Like, do they make you go to the places they want you to go to progress the story or can you wander freely?

I know its probably not bc pokemon but I just really want a pokemon game where u can wander off a little u know

No, the game is pretty tightly structured. The shape of the map is a bit more interesting then usual, but in the end you are still visiting all the towns and their gyms in the designated order. You can wander around the wild area, but it's not all that big or interesting, after 15-20 minutes you'll have seen all of it.

No, the most open world Pokemon game is unironically LGPE at this point.
They tripled down on SM's philosophy. You just travel to the next checkpoint or else you're blocked from doing anything. Even the wild area has you on a leash and punishes you for trying to explore any further before the 3rd gym.
