I beat the first yokai watch, a few months ago. It has some alright designs, but a few too many literal palette swaps. Also, it was a bit too easy and I'm not really a fan of the combat system.

Oh it absolutely did, problem is the owner of the IP is a fucking idiot sometimes and decided to reboot and reimagine his barely 5 year old series so much it’s unrecognizable. If it played it safe just a couple more years it woulda been so mega popular in Japan it would actual rival Pokémon

Yokai watch 3 was one of the best games I ever played and I mean that. God I miss yokai watch being good. If you haven’t been keeping up with the series basically they made it into a highschool AU with awful boring humanized designs. It doesn’t even have jibanyan.

As great as the games looked/played, Yokai Watch still failed in the monster department.
Your average Pokemon look more appealing and designed waaaay better than the monsters of Yokai Watch.

Yokai Watch almost hits what made Pokemon successful and that's what caused Game Freak to panic. However, it was too Japanese to actually catch a global audience. Even Digimon is better than Yokai Watch in this.

Quality-wise? It surpassed Pokemon a long time ago, so much so that TPC went through a jealous, insecure fit a while ago and started desperately trying to copy what yokai watch did when it exploded in popularity several years back

No unfortunately I dont think any monster catching game can beat pokemon until the inevitable bubble bursts. That being said it did manage to scare GF. Also Yokai Watch is a wonderful game series that I wish atleast had a big enough cult following.

Hell fucking no. Pokemon is a massive multimedia multi billion dollar IP. Even if Yokai Watch’s lifetime was a bit longer it would’ve taken YEARS for it to even come close to Pokemon. And judging by how poorly Level-5 managed the IP, that just wasn’t going to happen.

I saw a brief period where my Pokemon friends in highschool were picking up Yo-Kai Watch since it was taking so much time for the next Pokemon game, only for the next 'mon game to cause them to drop and forget Yokai. I think there was a niche for them to fill in between Pokemon games, but never a way for them to overtake Pokemon.

Also their localization times, what the fuck is up with that? Why is Level-5 so fucking slow to bring that to the west? It *can* be profitable, but they treated it like a proper fad and milked it for all it was worth in Japan before it died.
Has YKW4 even hit 1mil in Japan? It hadn't even cracked 300k the year it released.

It's a pretty gray area, but I recall the former product manager saying something about games being localized in-house from Japan. Considering the complete radio silence on YW4 though, I wouldn't keep my hopes up.

Not really.
I'd put it in the same boat as Digimon games.
Way to inconsistent to actually build up a stable fanbase.
Look at assassins creed or COD, same shit different skin and fast releases. That's what keeps many games out.

Plus Yokai watch has a problem with it's monster designs, whilst some are cool they are to steeped in Eastern mythology which doesn't translate well to the rest of the world.
A chingchong might think long arm granma is cool but the rest of the world probably thinks it's weird.
