Tyranitar's entire torso is basically just a pupitar shell. The holes were pupitar's eyes. The spikes on top of pupitar became Tyranitar's horns.

Its actually a pretty clever design imo.

The biggest question is why the FUCK does this pokemon have a cocoon stage? It's not a Bug, it's like a rock lizard. There is no logical reason it should have a cocoon middle stage.

It is. It’s a weird mix of a line molting like insects as well as like lizards.
With Mega Tyranitar, the Pupitar remnants on Tyranitar start glowing and growing outward, and Tyranitar’s back splits open like a cicada shell.
The idea of something coming out of Tyranitar, as if it’s the pupa stage for Pupitar and something, is a funny thought.

That's usually how they design pokemon, if you motice, on Tyranitars chest above the blue part, there are 2 black hole/triangles; the same as where Pupitars eyes/eyebrow holes are. This is how a good design is done. Unlike Greninja, who was designed completly seperate from the other 2 specifically for shilling purposes and that's why it's the worst and shittiest starter design. Possibly the worst design as it doesn't have anything to do with the previous stages.

I used to not really care for Tyranitar but for some reason SwSh made me like it. Maybe it’s because of that Larvitar event they had at launch that made me finally get to use it from the start, I don’t know. But I think Tyranitar is awesome now.

Is it considered a dumb/unpopular opinion to actually want more like mid-evos or something similar to this? Like for more drastic evo lines that feature big changes between stages, maybe having slightly smaller changes like this leading into a big change? The smaller change could just be entirely aesthetic or it could feature a minor stat change with it.

I like the idea of the first and second stage being quite different (but still fairly reasonable as evolutionary relatives), and then coming together in the finial stage, like Pupitar expanding outwards and regaining Larvitar's looks in becoming Tyranitar. I'm this >>45743826 guy and I think too many mid-stages arebasically just a worse/younger-looking version of the complete concept that is the final stage, and I wish more mid-stages were kind of their own thing, while also still building towards that final evo.

I think there could be a ton of potential in something like this. Pokemon would still be 3 stages, but with 5 different stages of appearance. As Larvitar gets close to evolving it's appearance changes to the next phase, but nothing stat related. Then it evolves into Pupitar, and Pupitar changes into that next phase about halfway to evolving.
