I couldn't get into SwSh when they released but now I have to isolate and I have nothing better to do so I might as well try again.

Should I buy the DLC after or before I restart the game? I have no idea what it contains.

Buy the DLC, finish the first one before you beat the 6th gym and the second after you beat Leon.

I drove out of a tier 4 area for 2 hours to a tier 2 using the motorways. Roads are the same as they always have been, no checkpoints or any of that crap.

Also, the tiers are advice, not law.

Before. Play IoA during the main game (you can start before your first gym battle, but I would reccomend doing the majority between gyms 1 and 3) then CT as post-game. It gives you a lot more pokemon options and makes the game less linear.
