They were so cool at first, they clashed with the traditional Alolan aesthetic so hard. Intrigue around them was one of the few things keeping me playing.
Then it all just went nowhere, they never got fleshed out, everything about them just got dropped in one big exposition dump. Then you visit Ultra Hallwayopolis for one massive disappointment.

I still like their autistic mimicry of the Alolan greeting. But they could have been much more.

True, but I also don't think anything in a Pokemon game ever interested me all that much initially either.
Most of the games just revolve around some team of grunts doing bad crime things for reasons, then later they do something with the box legendary.

The Ultra Recon Squad at least stood out initially as something that could be cool - which only made it more disappointing later on.

To be fair the blue skin is something that can happen with people with a condition called methemoglobinemia. The Blue Skinned people of Kentucky had a genetic disorder that caused this, for example.

Pokémon themselves have a lot of potential, as well as some interesting things that, while developed to some extent, Game Frreak tends to (intentionally?) leave out of their games and is only properly explored in spinoffs or the anime. So it's never interesting in the first place.

all I want is a game that takes place in ultra space. It would give gamefreak the ability to experiment with different terrains and creature design.

Honestly I loved SM/USUM because they brought back my sense of wonder in the series. When I saw the wormholes open up it was terrifying. The idea that giant alien monsters could just invade the world like that made me more engaged and want to keep seeing where we would go next. Galar was such a bore in comparison.

XY had a cut alien invasion plot line, it's why there's so much weird unexplained scifi stuff like Lysanderes robot arms and the visors. My headcanon is that ultra beasts were originally planned for XY, then were moved to the canceled Z version, and eventually converted into the main plot for SM

Their problem was being squeezed into a retelling of SM that also contained a big post-game subplot about Rainbow Rocket. If these stories were in a B2W2 style sequel instead it might have had a better balance.

I understand why they would want to avoid the player using their Pokemon on actual humans.
But she only had 5 Pokemon, and her team composition was completely unchanged between both battles. They could have easily slapped a Nihilego into her sixth slot.
