I've been rewatching the Pokémon anime and this episode really highlighted that this franchise has had the same issue with marketing for 20 years.
>Ash is in battle with Drake, the Orange League leader
>Dragonite, Drake's last Pokémon, just defeats Charizard and brings Ash down to just Tauros and Pikachu
The anime writers now have a decision. Do they let Tauros, a Pokémon that Ash hasn't gotten to use at all before this match, hadn't gotten much spotlight in general and could be remembered years from now as the hero of Ash's team that took down Drake's powerful Dragonite, or do they give it to Pikachu, a Pokémon that has already plateau'd in popularity and exposure and has nothing more to gain from nabbing even MORE glory?
As of now Tauros was confused by Gengar (healed) and wasn't hit much by Venusaur, who it defeated, so it's in pretty peak condition. Meanwhile Pikachu was in a terrible state after battling Drake's Ditto in a mirror match.
>Ash sends Tauros out
>Tauros and Dragonite share quite a few blows but no definitive hits
>Dragonite uses Thunderbolt and Tauros instantly faints
>Ash sends Pikachu out
>Pikachu is perfectly fine and bodies Dragonite like it's nothing
I like my gen 1 nostalgia as much as anyone but there are even worse examples in the Indigo League and honestly the anime has always sucked. This just sucks. They had nothing to lose by giving Tauros this bit of glory in the anime, and if anything more to gain by having more Pokémon have more exposure and popularity. It isn't like anyone can take Pikachu's spotlight. But the writers for the anime and the games, despite changing constantly, still fall for this dumb idea that they have to constantly reinforce the idea that Pikachu/Charizard/whatever else is the best to keep up their popularity, which isn't true at all. And it only serves to make other less fortunate Pokémon that could have more fans and good treatment suffer.
