It's not about size, it's that only one organism can be in a Poké Ball at a time. Thus any mon that appears to be multiple different organisms must be a collective consciousness of some sort.

It's just what it is. I think if they got an evolution where the leader changed forms but the others were still a little soldiers that would have sold the lore of this Pokemon a little bit better

what's the most individual pokemon you can have on a single team? 6 wishiwashi i guess but we don't know how many individuals there are in them. what's the most that we can count? or the most without repeating any mons?

Dragapult also has multiple dreepy with it when it's sent out to battle. Possibly from the same pokeball too. I thought of mantine but I don't think remoraid can be stuffed in mantine's pokeball.

pokerus is a virus, therefore we can infer that viruses are not considered singular living beings in the eyes of the pokeball. Of course this brings up the issue of deoxys being a virus, but we can probably attribute that to space fuckery.

A Binacle is two individuals capable of functioning independently, and a Barbaracle is seven individuals. Slowbro and Slowking also show that you could always have two different Pokemon species in the same ball.

Actually i think this is the real answer: multiple individuals can enter a single pokeball so long as their relationship is symbiotic. It allows things like falinks and eggxecute to make sense while the 6 tyranitar example doesn't.

Six 100% zygardes would amount to 600 pokemon, but there's the problem of it being a legendary so there's only 1 in the whole world, supposedly.

Stakataka is more viable since it's an UB and multiple exist. Each brick is its own being, so count the bricks on its 3D model and you'll see how many mons at once that'd be.

We don't know how many wishiwashis comme together for school form, so it might be the most numerous hivemind mon of all. If you have time, count the amount of fish on its disbanding animation, you could take that as the "canon" amount.

As for pokemon that are visibly formed by multiple entities permanently fused together, a team of:

I'd swap Dragapult for Falinks, since Dragapult is clearly capable of separating itself from the Dreepys (when using Dragon Darts); Falinks are never separated from each other, even temporarily to execute a move.

maximising the numbers with these suggestions (i switched out 3 eggs for 6 eggs and slowx for falinks since they're only 2 but left dragapult since they all go in the same ball, and are also clearly functional mons in their own right) that's 28 visible individuals

Siphonophores are animals that are actually colonies of countless animals functioning as one.

There are many eusocial animals where each colony could be argued to function as a single animal in a sense, and would collapse if it weren't for how its colony is set up (Naked Mole Rats, Ants, and Bees for the main examples).

It becomes weird when you enter Pokemon though since they're much more fantastical, but also a bit more rigid. Each Pokemon, even if composed of tons, is still considered just (one) Pokemon, and the rules of only 6 per team and one in each Pokemon make it even more confounding.

I'm thinking about making a team that each pokemon is actually multiple pokemon, the catch is permanently fusion like Magnezone and not fully evolved is disqualified. So far I got:
falink
kangaskhan
dragapult
dugtrio
slowking ( some source say they got devolved if separated)
The last slot is a bit tricky, mantine don't have remoraid with them in recent model, barbaracle seem like they can't detach, so I can't think of one yet.

We really don't know. Pokemon with more detailed lore that states there's one have had multiple iterations.
Zygarde barely has any lore so we can't say definitely that there's 1.
Not to mention two 10% Zygarde are counted as different mons anyways so the separation counts also as different one.

They didn't really put any thought into how Wishiwashi's gimmick would work in trainer battles, it was clearly just designed for the totem fight

But when you're battling with Wishiwashi (in the water, the only place a fish Pokemon can battle in-universe), it can just call wild ones
