I'll be honest, when it was first introduced in gen 6 I was annoyed because I thought the vast majority of the new fairy designs they introduced looked like shit.
Gens 7 and 8 introduced a lot of really cool and fun fairy designs though so now I'm more than happy with the type existing.

It's a whimsical cute "Girl" type and follow the "Super-Cute power" trope of seemingly adorable and harmless things beating Evil(Dark), Monsters(Dragon) and Brutes(Fighting) but because GF is incompetent they fail to address the obvious balance issue that Fairy type is too strong both offensively and defensively thanks to having the 2 worst offensive type as weaknesses.

And it will never be fixed because of the potential shitstorm of undermining Girl power and Feminism. For me, it would make a lot of sense for Fairy type to be weak to Bugs or Ghosts because girls are afraid of those things
