>>45760850This. The EV system in gens 1 and 2 might have been broken, but it's more intuitive. It makes sense that your pokemon would stronger by battling a variety of opponents throughout the game.
Changing that to "fight 252 zubat then 252 ghastly" in gen 3, without explaining this change at all ingame or in official guides, was fucking stupid. Just let EVs be blank points that you can distribute yourself.
