Whatever it is, I think they'll be trying to achieve three things:

- applicable to as many Pokemon as possible, turning them giant allowed it to apply a Mega-like status to all Pokemon, rather than the limited number allowed by Megas

- the effect is not (exactly) the same as previous gimmicks. Megas boosted your BST by 100 (except HP) and sometimes changed ability/type, Z Moves allowed you to power up any move and also often giving them new effects, Dynamax boosted only your HP while not affecting any other stats for 3 turns and also applied Z Move-like effects to your moveset while Dynamaxed.

- It will be designed with VGC in mind and may be kind of shitty in Singles because of that.

Considering how they've focused on changing base mechanics in the games (evolution, moves, HP) I think there's a solid chance we'll eventually get pokemon with 3 types. They could even have a way to add a type to existing Pokemon so every type combo you've ever wanted can become real.

I dunno, they've really been pushing Raid Battles a lot. Lot of games leaning on limited time in-game events lately, so they're probably thinking of ways to capitalize on that

Calyrex could mean Pokemon "fusions". Urshifu could mean different forms/fighting styles. And if you look at Zacian and Zamazenta, you could give your Pokemon armor or weapons that alter their typing and stats as well as give them access to certain special moves.

"Fusions" but bullshit fusions like Calyrex where it's just one mon riding another.
Any bipedal mon can ride any quadrupedal mon, and while they're treated as one mon, they take up 2 party slots.
Pic related as an example. Its ability would be As One (Intimidate + Intimidate)

That goes all the way back to Eevee from Gen 1

Now that I think about it, gen 8 did have alot of gimmick Pokemon. They even created a new baby Pokemon, Toxel, for the first time in generations, as well as created the concept of regional form evolutions.

Ushifu's a bit different from Eevee in that it's still an Urshifu and you can't tell which version of it your opponent is using in online play. On top of that it maintains Kubfu's fighting typing.

Uber-typing, for a few turns type weaknesess and resistanses multiply by 2 and stab damage is now x2 instead of 1.5, no other stat changes

I can live with this, especially if they do something where you can pick the 4 moves out of the 8. Fusions are something I've always wanted and this is a more reasonable way of doing it along with it working on every pokemon

Of course the starters will all have fusions. And assume all decent sized flying types will have fusions. And just about all the dragons will be able to act as steeds as well.

Tag Team. Two pokemon can tag team with one another, and you can switch between them without losing a turn. They would also have a special one off attack that depends on typing. Certain pairs would have a unique team attack, like Pikachu/Charizard, Mewtwo/Mew, Zacian/Zamazenta, and Slowbro/Slowking.

I'm sure peopme woukd find a way. Giving the fusion 2 moves from each ingredient could lead to some broken combos, and that's before considering double regenerator.

I don't think there's any quadrupedal mons with Regenerator, and cancers like Ferrothorn and Toxpaex aren't bipedal or quadrupedal so they can't even be in a fusion at all.

I was assuming those would count in the quadrupedal group. It wouldn't make sense for some pokemon to just be excluded from a gimmick due to their design.

No quadrupedal with Regenerator, but five bipedal pokemon with Regen (Slowbro, Slowking, Audino, Tangrowth, and Minshao). So yeah no double regen fusion which is a good thing.

Support mons.
Have a weak NFE mon team up with your regular mon for support, and make the battle a 2v1 or 3v2.
The weak mon can't be targeted for an attack, but it automatically faints when the big mon it's bonded to faints.

Turning into the 7th pokemon on your team.
With different evolutions based on story events
MC turning into a pokemon is coming eventually, it was set up in gen 6 with that scientist and random trainers talking about it.

I think this would be the right way to go. After seeing them forget about megas and seeing the disappointment that is Dynamax/Gigantamax (which they will also forget about), I don't want any new gimmicks that involve transformations. I'd like to see them try something like battle styles or form variants. Something that actually makes the game fun or engaging despite being made by GF. That might make me want to pick up a Pokémon game again.

The problem with the Kyurem and Necrozma fusions is that they have designs which required effort to make.
Calyrex shows that they've figured out a way to do fusions without having to actually design anything, which is much more viable for a universal mechanic.
