Evo levels were made for Gen V's exp system and based on where you'd find them in Unova.
Which made them fine for BW but shit compared to older Pokémon in B2W2 and terrible in all games since (see: Rufflet and Vullaby)

This is a really good explanation and it makes me kinda sad that GF chickened out of the new dex thing after BW.
It would be great if every mon in gens 6, 7, and 8 were designed around the region's level curve and designed for the region.
This is also why I feel like gen 1 is so good despite the terrible coding. The game was very much designed around catching them all, with 3-stage mons who evolve by leveling being extremely rare.

people don't appreciate Gen 1 enough because everyone tries their hardest to avoid being like a "genwunner" and by doing this they act like the opposite of them and give blind hate towards the Gen that kick-started everything in this franchise.

Holy shit I never noticed until now...
The only 3-stage lines that reach Stage 2 by level-up are the starters, the 2 bugs, Pidgeot and Dragonite.
The rest are either stone or trade evos. As a gameplay concept that's actually kind of clever.

I don't mind training them to lvl 30-40s. But lvl 50 for first evolution? C'mon. This is even more pain in the ass with Egg Pokemon, having to train that lvl1 Larvesta till it evolve is a pain in the ass

That's a good thing. I hate getting a Pokemon and having them evolve into a new stage within an hour of catching them giving you no real chance to be with them. I wish Lillipup evolved even later desu.

It makes the experience too uniform and cookie cutter honestly. Making the mons tailor-made to the region kind hashes out to clearly how the game "should be played." Find the odd gem that's really nuts for that point in the game or honing a late bloomer is part of the fun in rpgs (at least for me).
