It's not that deep. Dude is just getting older. S/M take place at least 10 years after the events of B/W. I do feel like they cut some of his content though. NPC's all over the region talk about the mysterious and skilled Sharped surfer, then you find the dude and he's like "Here's your Sharpedo, lets have a quick, unmemorable battle, k bye now for the rest of the game".

Although Gen 5 isn't my favorite, I like how the E4 and the Victory Road were executed on BW; the commentary, the designs, the layout, and the music of course. Ironically, the only thing I didn't like was the champion.
