They aren't some obscure indie games, some hidden gem. The only reason their sales didn't match DP's or XY's (which is pretty negligible when they've all sold over 15 million) was because the DS was nearly dead in 2010/2011. The 3DS had already been announced. Having been around (and even here) during BW's prerelease period, there was a lot of hype. But the age of the DS was nearly over. Those same kids who had one in 2006/2007 were now teenagers and were getting smartphones. Not to mention how strong the DS piracy scene had become. I remember trying to emulate Platinum when it came out in Japan in September 2008, graphical glitches everywhere. Two years later was an entirely different story. So many people had R4s, and DS emulation had progressed greatly.
So no, Masuda wasn't "destroyed" by the world at large shunning his masterpiece and leaving it to become some obscure game along the wayside. Whoever thought of this narrative should become a playwright because it's some dramatic narrative.
