Arguably Ash started to go to shit in Sinnoh after losing so many battles, and then his character was forever raped by Tobias. Let it be known that in the only league Ash ever won, he used a mythical pokemon just like Tobias did. Tobias ruined Ash forever, even worse than Alain ever could've.
Ash will never really be a pokemon master unless the writers just blatantly hand it to him on a silver platter like how they handled the Alola League win because his story has just been nothing but SoL and filler, only doing important things if he gets roped into them by fate.
