is there any point to picking a water starter? every gen has an abundance of water mons, I always find myself choosing between grass or fire

Depends on the Gen
>1: Tons of Grass Pokemon with identical typing to Venusaur and tons of Water types - pick Charmander.
>2: All of them suck anyway, but Fire is probably still te most scarce type.

I didn't realise until I typed it out just how boring I find monotype starters. I really wish starters had cool abilities, either unique ones or just let them have their respective HAs from the start. It would really make them less dependant on having an interesting second type to stand out.

You can make a full team with wild water types in BW. You can't make a full team with gen 5 grass/fire types.

Your water type options in B/W mostly suck ass. For grass you have half the grass types in the game that are better and Tepig gets overshadowed by the rape ape.

I never realised before listing them out just how rarely I picked the grass starter. I think it comes down to preferring an offensive style of gameplay, plus the weaknesses of grass types (especially flying and bug, which are abundant in the early game).

same, honestly.
there's always a plethora of great water mons to choose from, but fire types tend to be rare and grass types tend to be shit, so a good one right away is much more appealing.

In gold and silver get access to rage which let it basically solo the entire game until you get surf and ice beam. it is also the optimal speedrunning choice in Generation 2 and for the generation 4 remakes

Not once in my entire life have I thought of type balance when picking my in game team. The whole appeal of these games being easy is that you can get away with just using pokemon you like. Everyone bitches about D/P's fire types, and I'm just wondering how many steel types you even run into in a playthrough, nevermind how many of them are actually threatening, or how many other pokemon can hit them for SE damage.

wrong. typhlosion was always the choice for the whole run then master ball mewtwo to solo red, now it's typhlosion until the raikou manip. it's never been totodile in HGSS

Bronzor and Bronzong usually levitate (and you wouldn't want to waste a turn checking if they do) so their only weakness is Fire, while being very strong defensively and having annoying as hell movesets. I guess that's why you'd want a Fire type, to quickly dispatch of those.

how many bronzong do you even run into, and how much damage can they do in the turns it takes to take them out? not much. Definitely not stong or common enough that anyone should be planning their teams around fighting them. The absolute worst they can do is resolved with a persim berry.
