>>45790521the thing with g/s/c is that they could quite easily be fixed with changes to pokemon distribution/trainer teams. The core of the game is fine, it just made some dumb decisions. the non-linearity of the johto mid-game kinda screws the balance they could have gone for, because they needed to be done in any order. they could have just kept the leveling in a set order, making the trainer difficulty itself a hurdle to go in the "correct" order to achieve a smoother leveling and therefore difficulty curve
some of the issues in other games (lookin at gens 3/6/8 in particular) can't be overcome by simply rejigging the mons and trainers, but GSC is almost entirely held back by that.
for the kanto side of things, one of the biggest issues was sticking too religiously to "consistency" with gen 1 in some areas while flat out retconning others. wild pokemon in routes being the same level as they were in gen 1, while also having new mons there, or cinnabar island having a volcano that wasn't there in gen 1 blowing up. like the inconsistencies don't justify how much of a stickler they were with certain things and hampered the gameplay design but again, not hard to sort out.
