What was the point in Poliwhirl? Couldn't Poliwag just evolve into Poliwrath without the in-between?

No if anything Poliwrath is the problem. The design we got wasn’t even the original design(which had more notable differences)

It's simple really, poliwhirl exists because it's still hopeful that it'll turn into a frog eventually, hence the more cute and friendly design. When it become poliwrath however, it realizes that it was doomed to be trapped as a tadpole and it grows irate, becoming a fighting type.

This. There are too many broken abilities, ridiculous stats and solid items these days to care about giving shitty mons buffs. I know many people say there’s too much Jan to pandering but many gen 1 and 2 mons got screwed in our current competitive meta with so many new competitive changes

It got a big movepool expansion this gen so I'm okay with where Poliwrath is. Not every mon needs to be an amazing competitive mon and making it more useful than Urshifu of all things would probably just mean it's broken.
