I've been playing pokemon since gen 1, played all games and I can honestly say that those games have the most soul. You can feel the love the devs put into them.
The combat system is simplified (similar to gen 1 combat so no abilities or held items but you get special and physical splits, more moves and types, etc)
Catching wild pokemon is way more fun than actually battling them but its tedious when it comes to training your team since chaining pokemon gives way more exp than trainer battles.
You get more pokemon earlier (I'm using an oddish I got as my first pokemon) and you can easily add more members to your team (I've switched my team about 20 times as opposed to normal games where I plan my team ahead because training is more tedious)
Your partner is super cute (and strong) there's cutscenes, you see gym leaders in the overworld.
Pokemon are scaled to size, you can ride some of them or have them walk by you.
It starts very easy but difficulty picks up by gym 3 and it matches gen 1 games.
It's better than sword and shield and I hope they keep some aspect of it for the next core games.
