Was Roserade really that common? I can't imagine Budew and Roselia being that fun to use. I also never used Floatzel or Gastrodon in any of my many playthroughs of Sinnoh. Mind you I think I've only played Diamond twice while I've gone through Platinum a million fucking times. If I rack my brain here I think my first team ever was

I can remember trying to use Buizel, Shellos, Drifloon/Drifblim, Vespiquen, and Bronzor only to find they provided a pretty miserable experience. I probably had Bibarel or Gyardos for surfing until I got Tentacruel.

I mean, if you didn't choose Torterra, then Rosarade's probably the best Grass type to use, considering Wormadam's the early bug for Sinnoh, Cherrim is a shitmon locked behind honey, Carnivine's a shitmon locked behind the Great Marsh, and Abomasnow's pretty much unobtainable until after the 6th gym. If you want to bring Platinum into this, then Tangrowth and Tropius are also locked behind the Great Marsh. Leafeon could be used realistically, but why bother with a grass type when you can get Gible after the second gym?

I've noticed that games with samey team end up that way mainly because they put a lot of good options early.
Like BW2 doesn't have a bad distribution yet a lot of walkthroughs from what I've seen ended up being Starter/Lucario/Ampharos/Arcanine/Flygon. XY too had a lot of Starter/Blaziken/Lucario.

I can't speak to others, but I used Roserade on my first playthrough and I've used it in subsequent games. I almost always pick the fire starter, so a good grass type that can be caught early and evolves early is a godsend for teambuilding.
My first time through Pearl was:

was my first team. If I didn't dislike Infernape's design and went for it, I'd probably get Roserade instead of one of the latter two. So yeah, pretty close. I blame early mons distribution being more interesting than mid-game's by a mile.

If you remove all the legendaries and new evos which you couldnt fucking use before the postgame there is really not that many new Pokémon in the Sinnoh Pokédex, so everyone ended up using largely the same team.
