Gen 2's designs look too "cutesy" for me.
It strayed away from the MOSTLY monsterous or strange designs from the originals.
Just compare Ampharos to Electabuzz.

To be fair gen 2's strength lies in the little cup. Most evos that gen were complete shit and had less details than their pre-evos.

I don't think it strayed, I just think the reduced dex size made you focus on certain ones. We definitely had a set of cutesy designs in Chansey and Jigglypuff and Eevee line and Vulpix and Dragonite, meanwhile for the monstrous/strange there's Natu and Unown and Forretress and Steelix and Hitmontop and Tyranitar.
