How do you feel about the shift in tone the series took? Did it improve or diminish your enjoyment of the pokemon universe? Do you just not care either way?

nah it's definitely a more lighthearted, sports tour kind of adventure.
Each region has a different attitude. Gen 4, 6 and 7 were definitely the darkest. Gen 1 is really tame by comparison.

that's true, but it's also true that this game's story dies follow the gym challenge like it is a sports circuit. While you go through the same paces, the reason behind it is much more specific and the story gives you a lot more fluff about it. Shit like staying in hotels and meeting your competition is pretty nice and adds a lot to the experience.

You also don't get sponsored into the League challegne, have the entire region's focus revolve around the gym challenge and up to very recently, didn't even get acknowledged as Champion when beating the League, except for the games where you became the region's first-ever Champion and the region who's entire cast of characters was connected to the League in some way.

Other Pokemon games don't have the league as the main plot. All of SS's plot points revolve around the league, the rivals' motivations revolve around the league, NPCs talk about being excited for the league and the league results, Chairman Rose manages the league and sponsors trainers for the league, and the champion is introduced at the fucking beginning of the game instead of being left as le ebin secret twist to copy Kanto like gen 3-6 did.

Did you completely miss the point of the story in Black and White?
N is challenging the League so he can rule over Unova as champion and order everyone to release their Pokemon, so in turn the MC has to challenge the League to stop him in case he succeeds.

I think gen 7 and 8 are the only two games that bother to go into why you're doing the gyms. In gen 8 you start the journey specifically to clear the gyms because your character is a fan of the league. In gen 7, it's a rite of passage in the place you just moved to. In other gens, the most justification you get is a friend/rival deciding to do the gyms and the game making you go along with it. You can maybe make an argument for gen 3 too, since your father is a gym leader, but it's a fairly weak one.

Sure, but the point is after that point collecting the badges has an actual stake in the plot rather than just being an afterthought after you deal with whatever is happening in each city when you arrive.
Lots of RPGs do this, you start out with a simple goal and then as you progress more and more is added to that goal in order to raise the stakes.

Pokemon Trainer designs used to be so fucking boring, if there's anything that Game Freak has gotten better at it's definitely making the Trainers a whole lot more interesting. Caitlin is one of my favorites, but I really don't like what they did with Champion Iris and Valerie.

I hate it. The series had some darker elements and mystery to it in the early days, which is in stark contrast to the extremely lighthearted and cheery tone the series has nowadays. I bet it's the same reason why Masuda dumbs things down, he assumes kids are bumbling buffoons who can't handle the slightest darkest tone.

Only. They always only cared about children. The problem is that adults became brand fanboys and will keep buying the games anyway, which meant GF could lower the standards. Standards which never were very high, the first 2 gen were carried hard by the anime.

It's true, anon. Good games have a mixture of elements, a good balance of lighthearted adventure with some dark elements in the mix. If you go too lighthearted you get games like Swooshi, and if you go too dark you get games like Shadow The Hedgehog. Neither are very pleasant to play.
