I couldn't find a thread suitable for a question like this, so I'll make a general stupid shit thread.
A friend bought me a Switch, and I have no intention to pay for eshop. I have no knowledge on anything Nintendo or console in general, never really played console after early-mid PS2 cycle.
If I buy a physical copy of Pokemon Sword, then buy a digital licence for the DLC, would I be able to activate it without having to pay for eshop?

eShop is a free service. The online you would have to pay for would be if you wanted to battle your friend over the internet rather than in person. It would also be used for other games like Splatoon 2 or Super Smash Bros., but some games don't require it like Fortnite and Rocket League.
If you were to buy a physical copy of Sword, you could then purchase the DLC through the eShop without paying for Nintendo Online, yes. You could also look out for a physical copy that already has the DLC preloaded; this is indicated by a different box, as seen here.

When I was a kid, I distinctly remember using splash and it doing something other than what it usually does, but I don't remember what exactly it did. Did splash ever have a secondary effect, or am I just misremembering?
I think this was in a 2nd gen game, though it could also have been 1st or 3rd.
