Venusaur made Red look like an underdog. It feels satisfying to beat Blue's Charizard with a Venusaur than Blastoise with a Charizad.

Honestly with these early gens it definitely feels like the characters were designed around a specific starter choice, there are a lot of similarities between the trainers and the Pokemon if you choose Charizard and Typhlosion

Bulbasaur is the first in the dex so it makes sense he's the first pokemon the player should start with

Charmander line are cocky creatures who look down on others, which perfectly fits Blue's personality while Bulbasaur is calm and isn't a show off

also, Dragons are the most common "antagonists" in RPGs, not turtles.

- Venusaur being the favorite starter of Masuda and Shigeru Miyamoto
- Bulbasaur being the friendly starter while Charmander being the more aggressive and harder to raise
