I genuinely see no reason to include it. You can leave your weakest mon in front and then switch to a stronger one if you need to level for some reason, and dumb kids can beat SwooSh with only their starter anyway

The way I see it, there was genuinely 0 reason to have it. Everyone says it reduces grinding but I basically never grind in any of the games except red and blue and diamond and pearl, and even then it was only before the E4.

It's there to make the idea of using multiple Pokemon more achievable and encourage players to use as many Pokemon as possible instead of just sticking to the same six for the entire game. Same reason they made it so catching Pokemon gives you EXP, to incentivise getting and using new Pokemon.

rpgs with a ton of optional party members should have options to expedite grinding so you can catch up your guys if you change your mind about your team comp
if anything pokemon needs more shit like this
the fact that they havent normalised chansey grinding spots in every game shows how little gamefreak gives a fuck about making a fun experience

Its good in USUM where the game was designed around it, but bad in XY and SwSh where it feels like you're not meant to have it on but its on by default or forced on you

It's good if you like to switch team members constantly but bad if you plan on using the same team for the entire game. Yeah it should be optional though.

I found SM to be relatively well balanced around it, though the entirety of gen 6 was incredibly embarrassing and i dont have any experience with gen 8 so idk how bad it was there

It works well enough in Gen 8. As long as you don't grind too much you'll be within 5 levels above or below every gym. (I was a little overleveled fir the middle gyms but then the game caught up with me at Raihan)

Good if you rotate your party.
Bad if you don't rotate your party and only use 5-6 Pokemon, because you'll end up overleveled.

Playing Platinum again right now and seeing how I need over 12 hours of gameplay just to train all of my team to Level 28 and I'm still only at Fantina made me realize just how much of a god-send the Exp. All actually is. I didn't have to do that anymore from XY onward, meaning I could actually finish the game in less time.

Speaking of experience, if any weird decision baffles me, it's why catching Pokemon didn't give you any experience (even if only half) for catching until Gen 6. >>45819828 is right, it makes catching Pokemon actually worth it.

Because it's not a fun grind. You decide what you want to level, roam through tall grass hoping you smash into enough things that are weak to whatever you've got in first slot and of a good level band to give you decent xp.

Then you repeat with the next mon, with the hope that you have access to the right routes to level up the rest of the team to the point where you can beat the gym you're aiming at.

I like it as a QOL improvement, but I think it needlessly takes away the engaging decision of what pokemon to train and when. If it were me, I'd just increase the speed at which Pokemon level up across the board, and bring back the old EXP share that was given to a single mon, making it available very early.

There was never excessive grinding in the old games except for before the E4 in RB and DP. Other than that no grinding is ever necessary unless you rapidly switch around team members all the time in which case you’re being extremely careless and the grinding is a punishment.
