It's clearly supposed to be fossil fuel, it's literally the corpse of a dragon (and the japanese word for dinosaur is "evil dragon") that appeared thousands years ago, is related to some catastrophic event that included a meteor and produces a shitton of energy that retards think they can use without consequences.
Eternatus is an ancient (fossil) and poisonous (fuel) evil dragon (dinosaur) who can only give humanity energy thanks to the meteor that fell thousands years ago, now idiots think they can just milk the shit out of it, but it's better to come up with better solutions and not fuck with the environment

Not sure about the base form but Eternamax is definitely based on common depictions of a hydra. Most versions are dragons known for their deadly poison and infinite growth, and they're usually shown with 3 or 5 heads. If you look at Eternatus' "fingers" as heads it becomes obvious.

I mean even if it's a glorified cutscene it's still a really cool moment and one of the only times Game Freak's claim that they wanted to focus on animations with the new game actually feels legit. Not to mention there's already a real fight with Eternatus right before this so it's not like they're robbing you of anything by making the last one basically unloseable.
Plus if your Pokémon aren't shit you can buff up the dogs and participate that way.

I think it's based on a nematode. Specifically, the weird design is reminiscent of a lot of anatomy sketches/nervous system schematics any biology major worth their weight has seen in a genetics class at least once.

it's the 'eterna-' naming that made me suspicious. a lot of nematode testing is w/r/t determining how individual cells age/how the overall organism ages, and they have ridiculously long lifespans by default

also, the original name 'meteodyna' seems like a loose anagram of 'nematode'

as much as ive grown to like this theory, its design seems to be based on a scrapped idea for necrozma's dragon form. the possibility they wanted to base a dragon on a nematode seems slight

As per OP's question, it has similarities to Ultra Beast, a design/theme very reminiscent of them. Could have been called UB:Eternal and the lore could've been the exact same.

As for creature basis, quite obviously an "undead" or corrupted dragon. Kinda reminds me of the Archdemons from the Dragon Age series, if only the comparison weren't an insult to Bioware. The Eternamax also reminds me of a Reaper, who along with the prior mentioned Archdemon dragons have Lovecraftian basis. Tbf that first poster is correct about the Eldritch horror part, but it was never mentioned that it's a "god of chaos predating Arceus" anywhere in canon.

No, this is wrong. Not every multiheaded "dragons" are hydras. There are "Yamata no Orochi" too, but Eternatus isn't either it.
Eternatus Eternamax is probably based on the Shesha, the king of Naga, a giant Serpent depicted with multiple heads, most of the time he has 5 heads, and the tails is coiled as a spiral with Visnu resting on it.
It could as be based on the Ancient Serpent, or also known as the Apocalypse Dragon (which is Satan), which is depicted as Seven-Headed dragon who brings destruction and the end of the days, exactly like Eternatus.

My headcanon is Eternatus being one of the "thousand arms" of Arceus, who helped to shape the universe.
