Just look at real life, there are millions of species in animals and they don't look out of place you know... because its reality. In pokemon generations have different proportions, color palettes, shape forms... im not talking about pic related, that is a change in artstyle, what im talking is consistency between each mon, make it believe that they are from the same world and not just a 5 years old collage.
You could say in pic relaged gen 1 are "beta" releases and you see more consistency in gen 2+ bulbasaur. But gen 6 bulbasaur and other new gen 6 pokemkn doesn't stick together well, like they are from the same game. If you ask someone who know 0 from pokemon and ask them if they are from the same product or not, they would probably say no.
