>>45836194>The original show was only popular cause it was a part of an already popular franchiseIn Japan maybe but in America and other territories, during the 90s, the anime was the core center of the franchise with everything else being popular because of it. And America had seen plenty of popular anime dubs before hand, and a lot of 80s and 90s cartoons were animated by anime studios so it's not like Pokemon was the actual first time we saw something in that style.
The original anime was popular because it was a fun show that had a good mix of comedy and action. Visually the anime is better now, some great directed action sequences, but the modern anime is so stale is because instead of trusting the dub writers to just write around the Japanese humor, they just write something that's easy to translate into every language on the planet. Even when the show has good ideas behind it there's a soul lacking. The brand is just too big to produce something unique and fresh. Plus Takeshi Shudo was actually a good creative talent with a lot of great anime under his belt and he had decent creative freedom since the brand wasn't as hefty.
