People fail to realise the anime needs to appeal to girls too and while girls like Goh, Goh isn't a girl and some just won't relate or care about him vs an actual female character travelling with the group. That they've done so many "Ash meets a boy and girl and travels" plots so far, it seems they're changing up how they go about them now.
