Why can't Game Freak just expand their team? Why can't Game Freak just ask le Pokemon Company or even Nintendo themselves for the funds and other resources if that's the problem. What's their problem then? Are they legitimately dumb? Is this an outside problem? Is this Ishihara's lack of interest in the Vidya market?

They're not dumb, they've made good games in the past, the answer is most likely time as well as them not being as experienced with 3d. Eventually I believe as they keep working with 3d software the games will get better, and the improvements of environment betwee. X and Y to SM to SwSh is proof of that.

Here's the thing, Nintendo try with Mario, because it's just a kiddy game without the graphics - everyone wants to avoid the truth, but it's the same basic premise (getting increasingly more contrived - oh no, bowser's kidnapped peach again(1!11)) and without the adults continuing to buy in, its sales drop badly. Game Freak don't have that problem, fresh kids each Gen give them their bread-and-butter, they work on nostalgia to hook ex-players back in, proven by the series sales being largely consistent, except when the normies also adopted the system it appeared on

There's no incentive, because they're not reliant on that adult audience to bolster their sales.

Nintendo budgets are generally pretty low, compared to other companies. They counteract this by usually allowing pretty lenient deadlines (reminder their big holiday game of 2019, Animal Crossing New Horizons, was delayed until March 2020). However...

Masuda said they could keep up with the marketing schedule of TPC, even when it's blatantly obvious they couldn't and it was a bad idea. No matter how much money and manpower you have, if you don't have enough time to do something it will never turn out quite right. Now, SS isn't Sonic 06 or anything, it's playable. But so is Sonic Forces, and both games have "being mediocre" in common. Oh, and DLC that's better than the main game, that too.

There's a principle in software development, one woman can make a baby in nine months, but nine women can't make a baby in one month. Sometimes adding more people doesn't always speed things up. Some tasks have to be 100% completed in order and are dependent on the previous task being done. That said, the bulk of Pokemon's problem seems to be with art and animations, which absolutely can be done in parallel. They could have had support for all 900 Pokemon if they had just hired more artists and animators.

It's not even that, it's testing the art and animations. Imagine testing one Pokemon, every single action in every single situation, to make sure everything works. Now imagine doing it over and over again in slightly different ways to make sure it doesn't break. Then imagine doing that for every single Pokemon and variant because you can't be sure something didn't break in the other cases. If you look at the actual development stuff, the real thing that takes development time rather than debug time is making the maps. Mapping is hard in any 3D game, but GF are notoriously bad with that sort of thing. That may have been where they outsourced a lot of stuff? I'm not sure, I need to check the credits again some time.

Why would you spend your money on improving the games when it sells the same numbers regardless? Just dump everything into marketing lol. They would rather spend their bigger revenue on manufacturing more Pikachu toys, and it's a good move businesswise.

The problem isn't lack of time. It's weak leadership. More time isn't a magical solution to make a game better. I guarantee you if you gave them more time between gens, they'd put out an equally shitty product. Talent leaves over time, you can see that with companies like blizzard. The good people left there just like they left gamefreak.

GF has all the resources in the world. What they don't have is time. They HAVE to release yearly or bi-yearly games because TPC demands it. They don't decide when or how long to take to make a game.
Do you think GF can just go and say "you know, we'll take 5 years to develop the next game"
No. TPC is telling them "YOU will make this game and it will have to be ready by this date"

GF aren't the ones calling the shots here. They're just the devs, not the producers.
