Were these anybody’s first games as a kid? Did you look up what happened in BW? Did you just not know/care what was going on with the continuation?

It's already confusing enough with there being two apparently different games. Any parent that buys Pokémon with no input from their child either knows what they're doing or doesn't care what game they get as long as it's a game.

I never had any problems playing USUM without playing SM first, and those were actually good games.
Unovazoomers probably dropped the games when they got bored with BW2 anyway.

I can go even further back, and remember the HGSS leaks on /v/. People constantly posting roms, people downloading them just in case it's real, and playing those roms while we waited. Cooking Mama, Layton, Nintendogs, and of course, Cory in the House. Those were fun times.
