1. Gen 9
Gen 8 still hasn’t finished. It has its Introduction games and it’s DLC (replacement of the third versions) we are to expect another pair titles before the next generation.
2. Sequels
Black 2 & White 2 are treated as third instalments just like Emerald and Platinum. The difference was the story, since instead of rewriting it, they expanded upon it resulting in two versions. We already got the DLC which is treated as the new format of 3rd instalments.
3. More SwSh DLC
The DLC was only designed to replace the third instalments. Then again they could change the format and add more DLC but according to trustworthy sources 2021 will feature full titles and not DLC.
4. Let’s Go 2
LGPE actually didn’t sell very well in Japan, tho it did decent internationally. The reasons LGPE had any success was because 1. It was the first Pokémon title on the Switch and 2. It is Kanto so it banked on nostalgia. A second Let’s Go game wouldn’t have that advantage so Let’s Go Johto or Sinnoh would not do well.
5. Gen 4 Remakes
This is the most logical route for the next Pokémon games as we are due for another remake and is the only thing left to complete Gen 8. I would hope that it is a standard remake than a Let’s Go title because I could see massive backlash if they reduced the Sinnoh Remake to that garbage.
The only other possibility is a new region introduced mid generation, to change the format, but doesn’t count as a new generation because no new starters, and very little new Pokémon are introduced. instead it could be a region that has regional variant starters such as the sinnoh starters. Still my best bet is standard Gen 4 remakes.
