I think friendly rivals work if there's also a dickhead rival.
Gen 5 does it pretty well (then again what doesn't Hen 5 do well heh) with Bianca as the ditzy friendly rival and Cheren as the serious one and actually working that into the story well. Plus N for an actually villainous rival.

Here are some opinions I think are popular but I'm not too sure
>Gens 4 and especially 5 were fucking poison for competitive balance, and gens 6 and especially 8 have actually helped alleviate it a little
>Generation 4 was the best time to be a pokemon fan outside of pokemania since it's when the spin offs peaked, the events peaked, and online was still a super exciting novelty. The anime was also quite solid during this time

Charizard is actually pretty fucking badass.

I actually think Kanto (and Johto)'s design philosophy were better than from the other generations, especially from gen 8.
Kanto and Hoenn have the best starters, design-wise.
Sword/Shield is a shit game.
The dexcut was shit.
The only thing going on for SwSh is a good competitive.
The starters in SS are the worst this franchise has ever seen.
Cynthia is the best champion.
Player vs Red was the peak moment for the franchise.
In quality of the games alone, gen 3 to gen 5 is the obvious peak, both with the original games, spin-offs and remakes.
Pokémon Girl are, in fact, super cute and better than the vast majority of other franchises.
XY had a great anime.
In gimmicks, megas > z-moves > dyna-shit.

Dynamax is completely misguided. They tried to give us another "Transformation" gimmick, without understanding what made Mega Evolution such a cool and popular idea. Each Mega was functionally its own unique character. Charizard X doesn't just look bigger and stronger; he has a new Type, new stats, and a new Ability to compliment the change. A Fire/Dragon with Tough Claws and great Physical Attack. GMax Charizard on the other hand is the same 'mon with a fat HP Bar. And the design isn't even physically real according to in-game lore (lmao).

Moreover, making each Mega its own character meant that competitive players could ban / suspect test them on an individual basis. Instead of banning the feature in its entirety, like with Dynamax. It sounds nice on paper that "Every Pokemon can use this feature", but giving everything in the game a nuclear arsenal to compensate for their weaknesses didn't exactly make the game "balanced". Unless you exclusively play in Doubles. Maybe.

Every Pokémon game never failed to deliver what I expected from a Pokémon game so I like all of them.
I never cared about the Dex cut or the competitive aspect.
I enjoy the plot even when It doesnt make a lot of sense because I dont think too much about It.
All I care about its finding new mons I like, find out where they are and how they'll evolve, build a team of my favourites and complete the game.
Once I do that i keep playing casually for like a month and never touch It again, waiting to consume next product, and im okay with this cycle. I like to pretend i have excessive criticism and complain just to shitpost here and pass the time but its all roleplaying really.

I have mixed feelings about the availability of shiny pokemon lately.
Game Freak should be replaced by other developer.

Gary, Silver and Hugh are best rivals.
Cynthia is God, Leon is absolute weakling.
I love Ultra Beasts and all Pokémon who came from outer space.
Totodile is my favorite starter.

Lillie and Shauna are my favorite NPCs.
I hate Tierno, Hau and Hop.

I believe a deeper lore and world building to connect all the loose dots will make Pokémon a better franchise.
I don't play VGC because I genuinely believe that it is too edgy.
Showdown and Smogon are illegitimate businesses.
