The remakes aren't actually substantially different enough to make them anymore than just marginally better, so there's really no difference whether I play them or the originals.
Add onto that the fact that the only reason I'd actually go back to the Kanto or Johto games is so I can satisfy my nostalgia and I might as well just go with the originals in that case since that's what I grew up with.
Also HGSS is in the Gen 4 engine, so a playthrough of it takes twice as long.
