With Pokémon, the main thing that make each one authentic is having the traits of their species matter. With Riolu, you may have to write a character that is better and reading others than most would be and is hard to lie to, yet is hard working and true to itself. With a Charmander, there are less species wide traits and you'll mainly have to figure out how the tail works. I've read some works where the flame going out doesn't equal death but still has some consequences such as not being able to use Fire attack, but it can also just be as simple as being a health indicator that just doesn't go out unless the Charmander dies.
