Which one of the first three generations should I play and why?

Emerald. Gen's I and II are outdated and only played by nostalgiafags. If you want to experience Kanto and Johto, go for FR/LG or HG/SS.

Go with Emerald, since is one of the best in the series. The Battle Frontier is fun.

He's more or less right though, there's really not much reason to play Yellow or Crystal over Emerald unless you just happen to like the pokemon and the GB aesthetics better.

I'm not bashing the gens. I like KANTTOOOOO and Johto, but I just think there are better ways of experience it. Stadium will always be kino tho.

what this anon said pretty much. HGSS is even better and one of the best games in the entire franchise, but since isnt like an option go with Emerald

I can't thing of anything Crystal has over HGSS besides the option to catch Sneasel at the ice cave.
Not only did HGSS partially adapt Crystal's Suicune plot, it even ungimped the Kanto region.
