The stories in Digimon aren't good because they punch each other, they're good because they can come down to them punching each other in the first place.
Unlike Pokémon, Digimon actually has real characters with actual issues and conflicts that go beyond just "oh no the two cartoon villains are trying to steal my pet again", so yes, sometimes it does have to come down to a good mano-a-mano, and that doesn't make it retarded.
