In ORAS, I'd say Wally is the main rival. He has a more compelling character arc, tangibly growing stronger over the course of the game; May just kind of wanders around and shows up to battle you. She has no real development and her team is shit.

Idk I kind of liked that she was on her own journey and the romantic girl next door aspects that are brought in more in ORAS while having Wally be the more traditional rival
