The line was pretty nice, Tomy did a great job with capturing the likeness of most of the figures and making figures that could actually stand. I was never able to get a full collection unfortunately. A couple of them like Clefairy and Jigglypuff could also be pencil toppers.

I ended up with two Gengars, the original that was packaged with Meowth and another from a year or two later that I think was packaged with Weezing. They were made of very different plastic despite being the same figure. One of them was like in >>45880101, while the other was a much more subtle transparency (like Pepsi, where you need to hold it up to the light to see that it's transparent).

I remember my first ever import orders were for Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, and Deoxys. Gave Kyogre to a friend before moving away, then years later Rayquaza and Deoxys mysteriously disappeared after a roommate moved out. Still have my bro Groudon though.

I got mine from the pkmn collector community on livejournal. Paid about $3-5 each, though the rare ones are expensive. I think Electrode and Voltorb were most expensive

Forgot to say, I still see them at box stores here in US but they are pretty random, usually the popular ones are found easily, but you can still find a decent selection if you go to different stores. They've lost their massive popularity with all the new stuff out there

Most of gen 2 was Pokemon Center exclusive in the US (bizarrely, they were still making the 2-packs like in OP's image until gen 3. I found them on clearance at Toysrus). Also, as a random piece of trivia, Elekid and Jynx were the only two that weren't sold in the US Pokemon Center. Jynx for obvious reasons, and Elekid I suppose because they didn't want kids sticking it in power sockets?
