Cynthia is entirely carried by her Garchomp. Lance probably has the "toughest" team in the BW era on account of Fairy not existing as well as just being able to spam Dragon type attacks alongside great coverage.

Yes.
It also had different modes. One was the pseudo-Factory, another made you exchange a Pokemon with your opponent, and Type Expert forced you to use a monotype team. I remember using a Latios with no attacking moves for the second mode and the AI picked it like 90% of the time.

2 years later in SM, one is a Battle Legend and one is just a Pokémon Trainer (though I'm having trouble understanding how Red and Blue are still so famous in-universe given how they've been copied by every subsequent protagonist).

I have to assume the Indigo League was like the first one ever, since it's the only League besides Alola to not have a champion.
Since Red and Blue were the first champs, they got recognised as legends I guess. Especially Red who became a champion and then fucked off to a mountain somewhere so he could remain undefeated.

This, plus Half of Cynthia's team is weak to fire and the only one that resists it is Garchomp, and Blue had pretty good fire coverage. Saving an intimidate on Garchomp lets Blue win fairly handily
