The only people returning in Journeys so far also happened to be progression challenges in the region they appeared (Gary/Korrina/Iris were Gym leaders, the Alola gang were trial captains).
I doubt any of the contest companions are showing up, Ash is in the GBL and needs challengers.

Gary and Iris were never gym leaders in the anime, and the whole concept of a Trial Captain doesn't exist in the anime. Even if that's true of the games, I don't see any reason at all why the anime staff would base their returning characters off of that.

Yup. I think Mayfags, Dawnfags, and Serenafags are setting themselves up fro disappointment. Maybe the writers have some big waifubowl planned, but it does seem they are sticking to characters who are relevant to Ash's PWC subplot.
